Here is a small tutorial on how to use the application to find information about a given domain or about a list of domains you can import in the application's queue.
Fast Whois 1.1 can find information about a domain name in three ways (knowing these three ways is very important on making full use of the application's capabilities):
- you type the name of the domain in the 'Domain Name' field, select a server in the 'Whois Server' field and the press one of the
two 'Run Whois' buttons.
- you import a list of domains into the application's queue, then select a value for the 'Run Whois Query Every' combo box and finally make sure the 'Run Whois Query Every' check box is checked. This will parse each domain from the queue against the selected web server (or web servers if the 'Use All Servers' radio button is checked). You can also manually add items to the application's queue.
- you can make the application read the clipboard every X seconds and each text it find in the clipboard is added to the application's queue. Then using the second step above you can parse all domains from the application's queue.
You can instruct the application to parse a given domain against:
- a single server in which case you select the server in the 'Whois Server' field and make sure the 'Use Selected Server' radio box is checked
- all existing servers in which case make sure the 'Use All Server' radio box is checked. In this case the server selected in the 'Whois Server' field is not important. This functionality (parsing against all available Whois servers) is very useful if you think it's possible that a certain server may not contain the information about the domain you are looking up.
Fast Whois performs the domain search by querying the given domain name against a whois server and if it does not find the information on this first whois server then it will query another whois server referred by the first one.
Things work like this (this is just an example and domain name and whois server name may differ in real situations):
1. Fast Whois queries iconico.com against whois.networksolutions.com
2. Fast Whois parses the returned result and first looks up to see if it encounters a certain combination of words in this result. The combination can be "Can't find domain information", or "No match" or "No info available" but this depends on the used Whois Server. This combination of words is defined for each server and can be overridden by the user by pressing the 'Server Settings' button.
3. If Fast Whois finds such a combination in the result then it knows that information on the queried domain is NOT found on that server and will try another server referred in the result. This new server is found by parsing the result and looking for a specific combination of words. This combination of words can be "WhoIs Server:", "Target Server:" but this depends on the actual Whois server used. The combination is defined for each server and can be overridden by the user by pressing the 'Server Settings' button.
4. If Fast Whois encounters such a combination then it will retrieve the whois server name and will automatically query the domain name against this new whois server. This means that Fast Whois does not give up getting the information about the domain after querying the first Whois server but (if the information is not found) will try another referred whois server. Usually, the referred whois servers do contain the information needed about a given domain name.
As a test you can try the following:
- press the 'Show Queue' button to show the application's queue window
- create a file containing domain names (one on each line):
iconico.com
microsoft.com
ebay.com
amazon.com
etc.com
- press the 'Import Items' button and point to the newly create file. All domain names from this file will be imported in the application's queue. You can close the queue window (the domain names will still be in the queue)
- select the desired whois server in the Whois Server field or check the 'Use All Servers' radio box to parse each domain against all available Whois Servers
- finally check the 'Run Whois Query Every' check box and select a value between queries 1 second being the default
- please refer to the end of this post to see an actual query for these domains against the whois.tucows.com whois server.
The trial version of Fast Whois inserts text like this every few lines:

With Fast Whois you can also gather domain names from any page on the Internet and even from local files. The search is done using regular expressions. To reach the gathering domains functionality press the 'Domains' button at the top and a new window will popup allowing you to specify which pages or local files to parse for retrieving the domains. Once retrieved, these domains can be sent to the application's queue and parsed using Fast Whois in the manner explained above.
Query result (as you can see whois.tucows.com found information on all domain names in the queue):
