Using the trial version of Easy Sweeper, I made sure that I deleted only the temp and temp internet files from my computer and didn't touch the cookies deletion button. Nonetheless, I've had to log in again at all my usual sites.

Did I make a mistake of some kind, or do I just not know enough technically to understand why my cookies disappeared?

When your press the delete temp internet files button, it will delete cookies as well as they are also a part of these files. The delete cookies button is given if you only wish to delete cookies and not the rest of the internet files, but at the moment there is no option to just remove internet files while excluding cookies.
